Famous Indian film director Shakti Samanta was born on 13 January 1926 and died on 9 April 2009 in Mumbai. He was an Indian film director who was famous for his extraordinary film direction and cinematography. He made remarkable movies such as ‘Aradhana’, ‘Amar Prem’, ‘Kati Patang, and ‘Howrah Bridge’ in his career crossing over five decades. He was the founder of Shakti Films in the year 1957.
After finishing his schooling in Dehradun and Calcutta he started a teaching job near Mumbai so that he could be close to the Bollywood film industry and so he could try his chance at it and become an actor. But there was something different for him in destiny. After some time he became a member of the movie industry in 1948 as an assistant director to director Satish Nigam in the movie ‘Sunhere Din’ which was released in the year 1949. He went on to work with different directors as well in movies like Phani Majumdar’s movie ‘Tamasha’ which was released in the year 1952 and ‘Dhobi Doctor’ which was released in the year 1954. Eventually, he directed his first movie debut film ‘Bahu’, which was released in the year 1955. The movie includes the star cast actor Karan Dewan and actress Usha Kiron.
Director Shakti Samanta, an eminent Indian film director founded the most prominent “Shakti Films” in the year 1957. He directed approximately 37 movies and produced two. Shakti Samanta is one of those filmmakers who have directed movies from the era of black and white films to colored times. He was not only recognized for producing some exceptional movies but also because of the songs he put in his movies the choice of songs that exactly described the film scene. No surprise this legendary director is the name connected with the leading gifted actor of all time in the Bollywood industry, Rajesh Khanna, who created history during his career time.
He directed his first film ‘Bahu’, which was released in the year 1955. Legendary actor Ashok Kumar is the hero who presented Shakti directions his movie and finally made him begin his profession as a director in Bollywood. Shakti also proposed Sharmila Tagore try her luck into the acting career. Sharmila was later seen with actor Shammi Kapoor in the movie, `Kashmir Ki Kali` which was released in 1964 and the movie and songs of it was super famous even now days too. Their pair was a super hit couple in the production. He also coupled up with the popular figure of the 1960s, Shammi Kapoor, and worked collectively in movies like `An Evening in Paris` which was released in the year 1967, and the film `Chinatown` which was later released in 1962. Both of the films were commercially hit and super hit among Shammi Kapoor fans and Samanta’s fans. Samanta directed his last movie in the year 2002 it was a Bengali feature movie called ‘Devdas’.
He died on April 9, 2009. He earned Filmfare Awards for Best Film for Aradhana in the year 1969, Anuraag in the year 1973, and the same year Amanush movie too. Some of his famous directed movies have been screened at international festivals in Berlin, Capital of Germany, Tashkent, Capital of Uzbekistan, Moscow Capital of Russia, Cairo, Capital of Egypt and Beirut, Capital of Lebanon.
