Devika Rani actress & first lady of Indian cinema was born on 30 March 1908 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and died on 9 March 1994 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Devika Rani actress & first lady of Indian cinema who appeared on the silver screen during the 1930s and 1940s. She was the most authentic pathfinder in the knowledge, Devika Rani led a way that few women in the Indian cinema industry have achieved to do. She was the one who provided a green Dilip Kumar his initial significant breakthrough in the Hindi film industry!

Even before the Hindi film industry was dominated by actresses like MadhubalaNargis, and Meena Kumari, there was Devika Rani, a successful superstar actress, and film producer, who co-established Bombay Talkies, India’s leading and first independent movie studio, beside her first husband one of the pioneers of Indian cinema Himanshu Rai in the year 1934, and following grew its administrator after Rai’s unfortunate death. She enrobed every character at a time when the very thought of accomplishing women wasn’t honored with the demonstration in conventional society.


She was born on March 30, in the year 1908, Rani was brought up in a prosperous family. Her father, Manmathanath Chaudhuri, was the first Indian surgeon-general of Madras, and fortunately, Rabindranath Tagore was her granduncle so basically she was from a wealthy and talented family. After her initial schooling, she went to a school in London, she received a scholarship from the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in the United Kingdom to continue her goals of acting at just the age of 16 years old. But Rani’s opting to act as a serious profession was more further by circumstance than intention. At the age of 18 years old, when she was carelessly roaming around London, taking her education in the field of acting and music at RADA and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. She also received degrees in architecture and textile design and was serving as a stylist at a preeminent art workshop. But she needed support. In the year 1928, her serendipitous encounter with her future husband Himanshu Rai, who was an attorney turned film director, presented her living the artistic management she had explored.

In the year 1933, Rani eventually made her silver screen debut appearance beside Himanshu Rai in his multi-language movie called Karma. The movie was released in many countries like in England and earned exceptional comments with Rani’s play getting in for extraordinary remark. The film was especially appreciated for its almost four-minute-long kissing part between Rani and Rai, which regrettably did not charm Indian viewers.


Notwithstanding her achievement, the movie industry was a field controlled by men where prejudice prevailed in a major highest ranking. Bombay Talkies was set up in the year 1934 by producer Himansu Rai and actress film producer Devika Rani, was a disquisition movie studio that transformed filmmaking in the Indian cinema industry. One of the purposes for Bombay Talkies’ Endlessness in the memoir of Indian cinema was Devika Rani herself — the appearance of the workroom and the charismatic actress of the movies presented in its beginning years. In the years of the 1930s and ’40s Devika was her peak of career and dominating the industry with films like Achhut KanyaJawaani Ki Hawa, and Jeevan Naiya obtained Rani’s tremendous reputation and fame.

I am an enthusiast who likes to view every film, too but has not seen several of her movies, or I could say I have watched none of her films. I remembered her largely as one of the most well-known heroines of India pre-Partition. But there is a biography about her which has a sensational name biography of the deceased heroine (The Longest Kiss, published by Westland). If you pick up that book to read you will know that it was going to introduce you to a personality who seemed as bold as she was beautiful.


In the year 1929, soon after the release of her first debut movie called A Throw of Dice, Devika Rani, and Himanshu Rai tied the knot. Following Himanshu’s uncertain death in the year 1940, Devika Rani took the control of Bombay Talkies. She managed the famous and first studio with a strong and powerful grip, crushing all disobedience and continually leading a torch when it evolved to the men surround her.

Then, in the year 1945, she was introduced to the attractive and secluded Russian-born famous artist painter named Svetoslav Roerich, and, she retired from the movie industry the pair ultimately resided in Bangalore.


In a society where women would last numerous intoxicating collide for even considering these areas in the movie industry, Devika Rani led a pathway that fewer women in Indian movies have succeeded too, and revealed to them what it intends to take possession of their profession and economics.

In the year 1958, Devika Rani was conferred with a Padma Shri Award, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor by the Government of India. After this, she became the first-ever beneficiary of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which is the notion’s most distinguished honor for film artists in the year 1969. In the year 1990, the Russian government conferred her with the “Soviet Land Nehru Award”. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology released a postage stamp commemorating her in February 2011.
